Preliminary Task - Pre Production - The Script
Scene 1
Int. Barking Abbey Comprehensive School
Rebecca is shown painting alone in a art classroom.
Halle is walking through the art block, when she notices Rebecca painting alone through a peep hole of one of the art rooms’ doors. She presses her face up to the glass and her eyes brighten up as a mischievous thought comes to her mind. Halle then, carefully opens the door, and sneaks over to Rebecca, who hasn’t noticed her. When she reaches Rebecca, Halle scares Rebecca, who in a fit of fright throws her paintbrush up and it hits her in the face then falls to the floor.
Rebecca:
(Screams furiously)
Halle
(Laughing in hysterics)
Halle: Oh my god...CLASSIC!
Halle continues to laugh as she reaches down to pick up the dropped paintbrush.
Rebecca: What is wrong with you? Why would you do that!
Realising Rebecca is actually upset, Halle subsides her laughter. But, she is unable to contain her giggles.
Halle
(Giggling)
Halle: It was a joke, I’m sorry
Rebecca: A joke? Does it look like I’m laughing?
Pause
Halle
(Gulps)
Halle: No.
Rebecca scowls at Halle, her face splattered with paint.
End.

Digital Technology
Another technological advance that has change how films are made, was the introduction of Memorycards and RAIDs (redundant array of inexpensive disks). These were eventually developed due to the lack of storage space for tape-based films.Nowadays, directors are gradually shifting towards "tapeless" workflow as it is less time consuming and more cost effective. With tapeless workflow digital video is recorded as digital files onto random-access ports for computers like hard disk drives or flash memorycards. These files can be easily copied to another storage device, typically to a large RAID connected, to an editing system. Once data is copied from the digital storage devices they are erased and returned to the set for more shooting, therefore saving more time.
In conclusion, Digital Technology has changed how films are being made as it has made filmmaking less time cusuming as a whole, and is much more cost effective. This is due to the faster digital technology thats is constantly being developed like sound equiptment and cameras. Therefore, since cameras now come in all shapes, sizes and prices, it is now apparent that anybody can be a film maker.
The Canon XH A1
Design
Although, the camera weighs a hefty 2Kg, it is still conciderably lighter than most camcorders which makes it a comfortable choice. All the buttons and controls sit in logical locations, grouped roughly by function and generally in the same locations as previous models.A large chunk of the camcorder's design lets you determine the speed and subtlety with which shifts occur during shooting, including focus, zoom and exposure changes, and white-balance adjustments. This Canon XH A1 also offers a Slow speed option, plus a distance readout, help to keep a steadier control over focus response.
- 1/3 inch CCDs ( Charge- coupled device - analog shift register) with a resolution of 1440 × 1080 in high definition Mode.
- When recording in standard definition in a 4:3 aspect ratio an area of 1080 × 1080 pixels
- Capable of shooting with either 50Hz and 60Hz scanning range.
- Video is recorded to MiniDV cassettes with a maximum record time of 80 minutes.
- Customizations to the image on the camera include gamma, knee, black levels, color gain, and sharpness settings. These settings allow the person using the camera to create different looks for the production within the camera.
- Built-in microphone with a audio volume lock
- The camera features a flip-out LCD capable of being viewed from both sides of the camera.
- Instant AF is an auto-focus assistant that dramatically increases both speed and accuracy when paired with HD technology.
- Optical Stabilization Feature: it helps defeat camera shake from hand held shooting and even shake produced from a moving vehicle.

Soaps have been a major part of British and World televison. Soap operas started on BBC Radio 4, which has been running since 1951. But since the 1960s, soaps like Coronation street revolutionised British television with their gritty storylines and phenomenal ratings. But since the 1990s, a new genre called Teen soaps, have broken through and has had me (personally) glued to the television.
Teen soaps like Hollyoaks, Skins and Family Affairs often revolve around the lives of 16-25 year olds. The soaps are often set in working or middle class environments, and the characters are shown to be ‘normal’ or ‘the average’ person, so we, the viewers, can familiarise ourselves with them and their situations. The common situations deal with family life, personal relationships, sexual dramas, emotional and moral conflicts; some coverage of topical issues; set in familiar domestic interiors with only occasional excursions into new locations, such as the recent forest setting of Hollyoaks. In most teen soaps, the main characters are students who attend the local high school or college (e.g.. Roundview of Skins), however, the stereotype of a student is to be a ‘nonstop party goer’ therefore, a local hangout , club or Student Union is often a common setting whilst the students are away from school. The props used in the teen soap, are not very specific as they are shown according to the environment, for example, a school bag if in school, or alcohol bottle if in a club/bar.
The lighting used in teen soaps, is often very natural, realistic and relevant to the seasons as the teen soaps portray the typical British weather. However, although, some lighting is artificial to capture the perfect light, most Teen soaps are sets are real with real sunlight, such as the Village in Hollyoaks (Chester) and the College in Skins (College Green, Bristol).
Finally, the editing in teen soaps is like any other programme as conversations between two or more characters are shot using multiple cameras, to capture the characters face and lines, and then edited together, so their faces are shown as they speak. This is effective as it enables us ,the viewers, to feel like we are in the actual conversation.
